This workshop series is designed for Mobile Therapists, Behavioral Specialists, and Therapeutic Staff Support providing services to children and adolescents with severe social, emotional, and behavioral issues. The strength and challenge of the BHRS program is that services are delivered in social contexts where problems are occurring, which means in the home and school. In these contexts there are numerous relationships to juggle. In order to do the child-focused work well, therapists must look beyond the child and learn to “fit in” to the particular family or classroom context in which they are working, as well as be prepared to constructively handle the numerous interpersonal conflicts and boundary issues that can arise in these contexts.
The primary goal of this series is to provide practical concepts and skills for helping BHRS professionals to effectively manage these issues. Case examples will be drawn from situations involving children and adolescents with both developmental and mental health issues. Ideas are drawn from an integrative strengths-based, family systems model. The teaching format involves a combination of lecture, videotape examples, and role plays. Individual workshops may include the following:
- Creating a Therapeutic Alliance with Families
- Effective Strategies for Working within the Family Context
- Effective Strategies for Working in the School Context
- Preparing Clients and Families for Transition and Discharge
- Clinical Case Consultation Using a Relational Model
The general objectives of this training series are to enable participants to: 1) describe their work and their clients through a relational or systemic lens; 2) develop attitudes and strategies for working with children that is both family-friendly and school-friendly, 3) identify and constructively manage common role conflicts and boundary issues, 4) develop an awareness of personal feelings toward clients and families and how they impact treatment.
