This workshop addresses the heart of clinical supervision – giving feedback to supervisees such that it can be absorbed and used for growth and development. We will explore the reasons this goes well in some supervisory relationships while in others it does not.  Principals and strategies for providing effective feedback are provided, which includes a focus on goal setting in learning contracts and the supervisory alliance.  This training uses an experiential, interactional, case-based teaching format.  Supervisors are encouraged to present challenges they encounter with supervisees in giving feedback and bring videotapes of supervision sessions.  Discussions are then related back to the didactic information provided regarding the principles of giving effective feedback.

As a result of participating in this CE activity, clinical supervisors will be able to:

  1. Identify best practice methods for providing formative feedback to supervisees
  2. Demonstrate methods for developing individualized learning contracts and setting goals with supervisees
  3. Identify strategies for responding to challenging supervisees
  4. Support development of supervisees’ skill in case conceptualization
  5. Recognize and assess clinical skills in videotapes of family therapy sessions
  6. Establish and maintain a positive, meaningful, and effective relationship with supervisees
