The Application of Dynamic Mapping to Understanding Families in the Here-and-Now

8:30am to 1:00pm

Adding a Dynamic Dimension to Family Mapping

Participants will learn how to design a dynamic map of a session that tracks the initiation, facilitation and meaning making phase of an enactment.  Structural maps are helpful to identify an overarching assessment of the boundaries and hierarchies in multi-stressed families.  In this training, participants will learn to map the flow of interaction between therapist and family members. This mapping technique creates, guides, and shapes the interaction through an enactment with a focus on concrete measures that enable therapist to define the effectiveness of the intervention as well as redirect the session toward a more relationally effective outcome.  This tool is helpful for therapists and supervisors to evaluate video of family sessions more concretely as well as in the active “doing” of a session to enhance positive family relationships through the strengths that each member brings to the family.

Objectives:

  1. Describe structural maps in ESFT and how they are different from this new concept.
  2. Identify the importance of mapping the flow of enactments in family sessions.
  3. Identify and interpret a key for mapping the flow of communication throughout an enactment.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to construct a map that highlights the flow of interactions that is observed.
  5. Practice use of this new form of mapping while observing and assessing video of family sessions.
  6. Strengthen the skill of using this mapping technique using role-play.
