The Use of Somatic Techniques in the Treatment of Trauma

CE Hours: 4.0
Instructor: Dan Gilmore, MA, LPC

A Live, Interactive Webconference
Wednesday, March 4, 2026, via Zoom Interactive Webconference
8:25am-12:35pm

The treatment of trauma has undergone a profound transformation over the past few decades, moving beyond early concepts of trauma-informed care to embrace evidence-based, integrative approaches. Advances in neuroscience and the growing understanding of the mind-body connection have revolutionized how we support individuals impacted by trauma. Research now demonstrates that traditional talk therapy alone is often insufficient—effective healing requires bottom-up strategies that first regulate the nervous system.

This presentation will explore the neurobiology of trauma and the critical role of somatic interventions in recovery. Participants will gain a clear understanding of why these approaches work and learn practical, hands-on techniques to address trauma symptoms. Through case studies and real-world applications, attendees will discover how to integrate these methods into diverse clinical settings and combine them with established evidence-based practices for optimal outcomes.

As a result of participating in this training, attendees will be able to:

  1. Explain the neurobiology of trauma and its impact on the nervous system and overall functioning.
  2. Differentiate between top-down and bottom-up approaches to trauma treatment and articulate why somatic interventions are essential.
  3. Demonstrate practical somatic techniques designed to regulate the nervous system and reduce trauma-related symptoms.
  4. Explain how to Integrate mind-body strategies with evidence-based practices to enhance treatment effectiveness in diverse clinical settings.
