Suicide Assessment and Treatment through an Interpersonal Lens

A Live, Interactive Webconference
Wednesday, March 6th, 2024, via Zoom Interactive Webconference
8:25am-12:35pm

This presentation is designed to support clinicians in assessing and treating suicidality, utilizing the framework of Joiner’s Interpersonal Theory of Suicide. Participants will be introduced to the core components of the model, which together influence an individual’s risk of dying by suicide. The research suggests that when clinicians feel more confident in their assessment abilities, they are more likely to engage in effective suicide risk assessments and treatment. Throughout the presentation, participants will have the opportunity to work in small groups to explore personal beliefs about suicide, practice strengths-based suicide assessment, and develop comprehensive safety plans.

As a result of participating in this training, attendees will be able to:

  1. Summarize the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide
  2. Demonstrate strengths-based suicide assessment techniques.
  3. Create a comprehensive safety plan.

Creating a Positive Isomorphic Process in ESFT Supervision

Thursday, February 22, 2024, Core A & B Group via Live Zoom Workshop
Friday, February 23, 2024, Core C group via Live Zoom Workshop
Training Hours: 4.0

Therapists face many challenges in delivering intensive in-home treatment, often leading to a state of overwhelm.  Their need for extra support can create a dilemma for supervisors, balancing giving extra emotional support with a case or model focus.  It is easy for supervisors to become reactive, becoming organized by the ebb and flow of therapist needs from week to week, rather than remaining focused on mutually agreed upon goals.  This may negatively impact therapists’ growth and development as well as treatment outcomes.  This interactive training uses videotape review and the rubric Being, Seeing, Thinking, and Doing to help participants generate a laser focused process of conducting supervision that is well-balanced and reflective in nature.

Objectives:
As a result of attending this educational activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the role of isomorphic process in supervision.
  2. Identify a supervisory structure that promotes a reflective process and therapists’ critical thinking.
  3. Describe how the rubric Thinking, Seeing, Being, and Doing, and the NIP, can be used to build  therapists’ clinical skills.

This is an intermediate level course. The target audience is behavioral health supervisors working within Pennsylvania’s Family Based program. This is a live synchronous distance learning activity conducted in real time, allowing for simultaneous participation of participants and instructors from different locations.

Cultivating Intentional Co-Therapy Teams

A Live, Interactive Webconference

Cost: This training is free but open only to supervisors and behavioral health professionals working in agencies contracted with CFBT

Friday, March 1, 2024, All Training Groups via Live Interactive Zoom
8:25am-1:05pm

Cultivating collaborative teams is at the heart of the ESFT approach to intensive in-home treatment serving youth with serious emotional problems and their multi-stressed families. Not only do therapists work as co-therapists, but they also cultivate collaborative partnerships with caregivers, the child, and other professionals in the child’s eco-system. This workshop focuses primarily on the co-therapy team. At times, teaming can be one of the most personally challenging components of family-based treatment. And the value-added benefits of using the team to enhance treatment are often overlooked. This workshop explains the benefits of working in co-therapy teams in home-based treatment and identifies the features of successful, well-functioning teams.  Particular attention is given to the skills, attitudes, and stages associated with the development of a team. Strategies are described and demonstrated via videotape for utilizing co-therapy teams to maximize the potency of family treatment.

Objectives

As a result of attending this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the benefits of working as a collaborative team
  2. Identify the elements of a well-functioning team
  3. Demonstrate strategies for maximizing the use of co-therapy teams to help families meet their treatment goals
  4. Describe effective communication and conflict management strategies so you can be a more effective team partner

What ESFT Supervisors Do in Supervision

Friday, February 9, 2024, North Carolina Training Groups via Live Interactive Zoom Webconference
1:00pm-4:00pm

In behavioral health agencies providing intensive in-home treatment, there is often little organized preparation for stepping into a supervisory position overseeing the implementation of ESFT.  Initially the role can be overwhelming, given the multiple tasks of monitoring fidelity for model implementation, supporting therapists’ clinical skill development, and engaging reluctant staff who may have been practicing a different model before ESFT.

This workshop clarifies what effective ESFT supervisors do supervision. Strategies are presented for preparing the ESFT supervisor for the role through organized onboarding procedures that cover common challenges. As part of this goal, experienced ESFT supervisors are encouraged to share “lessons learned” with the newer ESFT supervisors. Focus is given to how new supervisors can best incorporate CFBT self-monitoring tools such as Recognizing Process in Clinical Supervision Rating Form and the Doing of Supervision Form.  Videotapes of family therapy sessions and supervision sessions are reviewed for practicing using these supervisory tools.

This is a live synchronous distance learning activity conducted in real time, allowing for simultaneous participation of participants and instructors from different locations.

Objectives:

As a result of participating in the forums, participants will be able to:

  1. Clarify the roles and responsibilities of an ESFT supervisor.
  2. Identify strategies for onboarding new ESFT supervisors.
  3. Demonstrate the use of ESFT self-monitoring tools for improving supervisory practices.

Agenda

12:55pm-2:30pm: Focus on Objectives 1-2
2:30pm-2:40pm: Break
2:40pm-4:05pm: Focus on Objective 3

This is an intermediate level course. The target audience is behavioral health supervisors working within an Ecosystemic Family Therapy Model in the North Carolina Intensive In-Home Program. This is a live synchronous distance learning activity conducted in real time, allowing for simultaneous participation of participants and instructors from different locations.
